It's certainly up there with Black Mountain and Brevard. I think Blowing Rock is what you are looking for. There's also Tweetsie theme park which is a small amusement park built around an old steam train. We used to take our kids there all the time. There's a great little playground right in downtown Blowing Rock that your toddler would love. Here's a couple of links for Linville Falls: There are other shorter hikes in the vicinity of Grandfather Mountain off the Blue Ridge Parkway like Rough Ridge and Beacon Heights: We usually go up the Profile Trail, but it's a pretty strenuous hike and can take half a day. Bethlehem is somewaht funky with an interesting mix of counterculture types and an orthodox Jewish retreat. Littleton is a small working city, not as touristy, but pleasant enough. There is also a state park side that is free to visit and hike on. North Conway is the most commercialized, but even then it is quite picturesque. There are animal habitats where you can see otter, mountain lions, bears (fun for a toddler), etc, a museum, and more. Grandfather Mountain has a paid attraction side where you can drive up to the top. Black Mountain is close to Asheville, though, if you want to go into Asheville for food, art, beer, etc. I like Black Mountain, but I think Blowing Rock has more to offer as far as proximity to hiking. Blowing Rock would be a great base for both. Grandfather Mountain has amazing hiking, too, arguably a good bit better than Mt Mitchell. I'm not sure what hikes you're interested in as far as Linville Gorge - it's a huge wilderness and there are lots of options - but if you are thinking about Linville Falls I would stay in Blowing Rock. ![]() Hiking you can literally find all over the mountains. There are some good restaurants but neither town is the foodie hot spot that Asheville is.Īsheville is one of the true foodie gems of the Southeast and the country. Tons of amazing hiking up there too plus it’s much cooler in summer being above 3000 feet. If you can compromise on the foodie thing then Brevard could be good but for my money we go to Boone and Blowing Rock.
